Channel 4 aired its new drama The Accident tonight (October 24) and viewers have delivered a rather damning verdict. Starring Sarah Lancashire ( Happy Valley) and Joanna Scanlan ( The Thick of It) and written by Jack Thorne, the four-part show follows a small Welsh town that's left devastated after an explosion and the collapse of a regeneration project results in the deaths of several teenagers. Channel 4 The new series is inspired by the real-life tragedy of Grenfell Tower, which burned down in 2017, killing 72 residents. It's also loosely based on the 1966 Aberfan disaster, in which the collapse of a colliery spoil tip plant led to several buildings being covered by a slurry, including a local junior school, claiming the lives of 116 children and 28 adults. However, while the series promises to deliver some hard hits over the course of the remaining three episodes, viewers were far from impressed by tonight's premiere, with many criticising the performances, Welsh accents, writing, plot and. well, everything else, really. One person tweeted. TheAccident 15 mins in and looks like @Channel4 have done everything they can to combine Skins, Happy Valley & Casualty into one show with the dodgiest South Walian accents. While another wrote: Given the cast, I had high hopes for #theaccident. So far the plot has been ridiculous. A smallish bang and the whole community flock to a building site. Reports of gas leaks and the rescue team using angle grinders? Poor. Check out more of the reactions below. The Accident airs Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 4. Drinking me and my nephew ready to rock n roll in town love this band one of our faves. Set in a "left behind" town in Britain dealing with the aftermath of a horrific accident that changes the lives of countless residents, Channel 4's new drama The Accident sadly sounds like an all too familiar tale. But is The Accident based on a true story? Well, despite the narrative being based on a very believable incident, the show isn't in fact based on truth. Writer Jack Thorne explained in an interview with Channel 4 that, when he wrote the script, he spent an enormous amount of time finding out about accidents that had happened in real life. All with the aim of making the incident in the story as believable as possible. "We spent a long time researching everything and constructing an accident that felt real which enabled our drama to do everything it needed to do. the writer said. Thorne went on to mention the 2017 Grenfell fire and the 1966 collapse of a colliery spoil tip in Aberfan as two real-life incidents they focused on. When asked why this was a particular area of interest, Thorne explained: I was horrified as I think the whole country was that Grenfell happened in a country as developed and seemingly as rich as ours. He went on to speak specifically about the building's construction: I then grew progressively more horrified when the cladding wasnt immediately removed from all the flats and when you read stories about either the residents themselves not being rehoused or other residents being stuck at the top of a tower block absolutely terrified every night because they had the cladding and they didnt have the money to remove it and were still not removing that cladding. The Accident sees the fictional Welsh town of Glyngolau reeling after several lives are lost after a night of teenage mischief turns to tragedy. When a group of young people break into a building site, they had no idea that a deadly explosion was about to take place. As the town mourns and comes to grips with what has happened, questions are asked. What happened, how did it happen, and who is responsible? The Accident/Channel 4 Thorne explained to Channel 4 the two reasons he decided to set the story in Wales. One is because he loves "Welsh culture" and "Welsh actors" and he "thought it was an opportunity to get them in the show. Speaking about the second, he said: Im half Welsh. so Ive spend a lot of my life in and around Wales. Those valley towns have been decimated by the industrial changes we have had in the last 30 years and there is no industry left. So I tried to think of an area where investment would be encouraged to a degree that would allow us to tell the story that we wanted to tell. There are of course lots of areas in the UK that could of worked for that but Wales felt somehow right and those valley towns are a) so beautiful and b) so economically deprived I thought it would be an interesting theme to explore. Maria indonesian idol 2019 the best. High tone. controller emotion. You all get out of your cars. You are alone in yours, and there are three teenagers in theirs, an older Camaro in new condition. The accident was your fault, and you walk over to tell them this. Walking to their car, which you have ruined, it occurs to you that if the three teenagers are angry teenagers, this encounter could be very unpleasant. You pulled into an intersection, obstructing them, and their car hit yours. They have every right to be upset, or livid, or even violence-contemplating. As you approach, you see that their driver's side door won't open. The driver pushes against it, and you are reminded of scenes where drivers are stuck in submerged cars. Soon they all exit through the passenger side door and walk around the Camaro, inspecting the damage. None of them is hurt, but the car is wrecked. "Just bought this today. the driver says. He is 18, blond, average in all ways. "Today. you ask. You are a bad person, you think. You also think: what a dorky car for a teenager to buy in 2005. "Yeah, today. he says, then sighs. You tell him that you are sorry. That you are so, so sorry. That it was your fault and that you will cover all costs. You exchange insurance information, and you find yourself, minute by minute, ever more thankful that none of these teenagers has punched you, or even made a remark about your being drunk, which you are not, or being stupid, which you are, often. You become more friendly with all of them, and you realise that you are much more connected to them, particularly to the driver, than possible in perhaps any other way. You have done him and his friends harm, in a way, and you jeopardised their health, and now you are so close you feel like you share a heart. He knows your name and you know his, and you almost killed him and, because you got so close to doing so but didn't, you want to fall on him, weeping, because you are so lonely, so lonely always, and all contact is contact, and all contact makes us so grateful we want to cry and dance and cry and cry. In a moment of clarity, you finally understand why boxers, who want so badly to hurt each other, can rest their heads on the shoulders of their opponents, can lean against one another like tired lovers, so thankful for a moment of peace.

Watch full length what about love song. Jack Thorne's latest series, starring Sarah Lancashire and Sidse Babett Knudsen, looks at how the public aftermath of a disaster can lead to dehumanizing results. Its not that anyone is especially happy in the opening chapter of “ The Accident, ” but as the new four-part series progresses into a morass of dehumanizing corporate nightmares and horrific tales of physical and emotional trauma, its enough to make you appreciate the brighter prologue of this tale set in the fictional coastal Welsh town of Glyngolau. As with many aspects of creator Jack Thornes latest gutting TV drama, premiering Friday on Hulu after airing on Channel 4 last month, longing for any sort of relief and finding precious little is largely the point. To tell a community-wide story of tragedy and malfeasance, Thorne and director Sandra Goldbacher offer a relentless portrait of crisis thats oppressive by design. That emotional vice grip is extremely affecting at times, but the more the show relies on recreating a feeling of emptiness, the more it gets what its going for. That unassuming opening, of the people in Glyngolau prepping for a town-wide fun run, quickly gives way to an unforeseen disaster. Rebellious teen Leona Bevan (Jade Croot) leads a group of friends into a construction site, intent on putting a literal and figurative stain on the local crown jewel building development personally championed by her councillor father Iwan (Mark Lewis Jones. While theyre inside, a mysterious explosion then leads to multiple deaths, and the aftermath of the resulting collapse intertwines the lives of the family members left behind. Leonas mother Polly (Sarah Lancashire) becomes the reluctant face of the movement seeking retribution from the construction company that was heading up the project. Along with other mothers and wives, including Angela Griffiths (Joanna Scanlan) and Debbie Kethin (Genevieve Barr) she weighs her own options as the company head Harriet Paulsen ( Sidse Babett Knudsen) plots out her own defense. Understandably, among the victims families, theres a lingering sense of mistrust. Some parents are grieving family members who have passed, while others face difficult post-hospital home care situations. Finding justice for what happened eventually comes with trying to put a price tag on their own suffering. Thorne organizes these four episodes as pieces in an ever-hovering mystery. The incremental momentum toward finding answers, complete with a time jump, offers some understanding of who these individuals are. Most of the series attention is wrapped up in untangling whats happening in the moment rather than looking at who the people of Glyngolau are or how theyve been changed. As if dealing with community-wide loss isnt enough to contend with, a few of the central characters are given parallel personal horrors to contend with as their lives are crumbling around them. “The Accident” Channel 4/The Forge/Warren Orchard As the series progresses, the circumstances tying some of these central individuals become even more linked. It culminates with a handful of courtroom sequences that try to offer some sense of triumphant catharsis — whether purposefully empty or the result of the previous three hours story, theres an ennervated feeling to much of “The Accident” that makes it hard to respond to it as anything other than a drawn-out grief exercise. Each development in the story is a reminder that their suffering is still there, without really knowing what to do with it. Thorne has spoken about drawing on the real-life parallel of the tragedy at the London-area Grenfell Tower, where a structural fire lead to over 70 fatalities. That disaster, made worse by improper construction practices, is still the subject of ongoing inquiry and has become a focal point in U. K. discussions around regulations and public housing. When it feels like Thorne is drawing on those real-life parallels, theres some real strength in “The Accident. ” Showing a marked contrast between the cushy, sanitized corporate office setting and the day-to-day life of the Glyngolau residents only underlines the disconnect in how they see adequate justice for what happened. The cynical PR spin trying to work against spontaneous, impassioned community response is a cycle familiar to anyone whos seen activism play out in a public sphere. The more manufactured elements of how this story plays out — affairs, withheld testimony, tabloid curveballs — only serve to a draw a line where the lived-in environments end and the cheaper shortcuts begin. Fortunately, this cast is more than capable to handle either side. Knudsen brings quiet internal conflict to a part that could easily be dotted by invisible, giant currency-shaped eyeballs or typical corporate overlord archetypes. Balancing a family filled with impossibly difficult obstacles, Lancashire turns Pollys search for meaning into a performance that embraces the ambiguity of many stages on the journey. The Glyngolau survivors all face a certain physical toll that translates on-screen, even when those telling the story dont always trust that pain to come through unadorned. So maybe the exhaustion is the point, to craft something that if it doesnt recreate the emotions of watching the young people of your neighborhood exhumed from rubble, can at least approximate it. Those looking for verisimilitude may find some in “The Accident, ” but getting through to the conclusion, its still murky what all of that on-screen suffering services. Grade: B- “The Accident” is now available to stream on Hulu. Sign Up: Stay on top of the latest breaking film and TV news! Sign up for our Email Newsletters here.

Watch Full Length What About love life. A part from the explosion, The Accident (Channel 4) is very quiet. Hairdresser Polly (Sarah Lancashire) doesnt even shout when she finds her 15-year-old daughter Leonas latest one-night stand still in her bedroom. She just flings his clothes at him, notes that Leona (Jade Croot) is underage and that he looks 28, and makes him jump out of the window. Then she takes herself off to the local charity run with her friends. They are walking, Pollys best friend, Angela (Joanna Scanlan) says firmly. So begins the new four-part drama by Jack Thorne, the unassailable powerhouse behind the likes of This is England, Skins, Kiri (in which Lancashire also starred) and the forthcoming adaptation of Philip Pullmans fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials. The people of the small “left behind” fictional Welsh town of Glyngolau are celebrating a new construction project – championed by Pollys husband Iwan, the local councillor – that is due to bring 1, 000 new jobs to the area. As they start their “run” they hear a terrible noise. On the building site, a factory block has blown up. What follows is the story of the shockwaves that ripple out from that event, finding the fissures in the community and causing relationships to crumble as people assign blame, cope with bereavement and survive the fallout. Youngsters were trespassing inside the building when the explosion happened. Ash floats down silently as Polly and her friends realise their sons and daughters are trapped beneath the rubble. The husband of another friend, Debbie (Genevieve Barr) was in charge of security on the site and is also missing. They wait quietly at the hospital until doctors pad down corridors to deliver the news. Polly and Iwans daughter has life-changing injuries. Angelas daughter, Mia, is dead, along with several other people, including Debbies husband. Instantly, the air is thick with grief, injustice and resentment. The luck of the draw is rarely more unbearable. Inside Pollys home after the initial shock has worn off, a harrowing scene shows how some people channel their anger, guilt or impotence – or perhaps simply use events to justify behaviour that is always searching for an excuse to come out. It is a scene that reminds us not to forget the question of personal responsibility, even as larger ones threaten to dwarf it. As grief gives way to anger (“No singing! ” screams a furious Angela as the townspeople return to the site to keep vigil the night after the explosion) the question of who is to blame comes to the fore. The shifting pressures are minutely recorded in Thornes dense but delicate script and Sandra Goldbachers searching direction. Thornes inspiration is the Grenfell tower fire, and the issues of corporate responsibility, greed and inhumanity raised by it. But the Welsh setting inevitably calls to mind perhaps the most potent example of negligence and inhumanity there has ever been, the Aberfan disaster, which cost a village its children 53 years ago – almost to the day The Accident was broadcast. The face of the construction company is Harriet (Sidse Babbett Knudsen) on whom Polly turns at the site as the first bodies are brought out, accusing her of doing things on the cheap, all of which is captured by the television cameras. Harriet is already struggling with the conflict between her natural instinct to help and her professional need to keep a distance. What the latter masks and how much truth there is to Pollys claim will surely only become more complicated over the coming weeks. The Accident is another magnificent example of Thornes talent for taking a huge story containing multitudinous contemporary concerns and distilling them into emotive stories on a scale we can cope with, be compelled by, learn from. The Accident forms, Thorne has said, the third part of a loose trilogy that began with 2016s National Treasure (about the trial of a TV personality accused of Operation Yewtree-like offences) and continued in Kiri (about the death of a child in care) which looks at who and what we are as a nation, the lies we tell ourselves, the money and the politics that corrupt us and the lines along which we crack when under pressure. It promises to be a fittingly thoughtful and wholly absorbing last instalment. Though not, of course, the last drama from Thorne, who looks set fair to become the Alan Bleasdale of our tattered age. Never have we had more need of one. • This article was amended on 25 October 2019 because an earlier version misnamed the character played by Joanna Scanlan, Angela, as Anna. This has been corrected.

The Accident is hard-going but important and brilliant (Picture: Channel 4) The Accident reunites Sarah Lancashire with writer Jack Thorne for the final installment in his hard-hitting TV drama trilogy after National Treasure and Kiri. The series focuses on the Welsh town of Glyngolau, rocked by an explosion on a construction site, killing many of the local children. Its as hard-going as it sounds, with director Sandra Goldbacher (whose creative flair elevates this) only shying away from what causes the explosion in favour of honing in on the grief and uncomfortable relationships between those impacted. Not showing us what exactly what caused the building to come down was a clever move, allowing us to form our own opinions as the story plays out through the eyes of the families over the next three episodes. When speaking to press about the show, Lancashire praised Thorne for taking what is a huge story, a disaster with echoes of Grenfell and Hillsborough, and shrinking it down to something raw and human. It didnt get more raw than the reveal of Iwans (Mark Jones) physical abuse of Polly (Lancashire) which totally blindsided you when it played out, him punching her in the stomach on the floor of their house. While the question of who is to blame is left open, the visual of calm and collected architect Harriet (Sidse Babett Knudsen) squaring up to Polly in her mumsy, baggy jumper made it hard not to side with the latter. Sarah Lancashire shines as Polly (Sarah Lancashire) But Polly and Iwans daughter Leona (Jade Croot) has an axe to grind with her dad, and her presence at the construction site – Iwans baby – when it blows does raise some questions. We didnt actually see what caused the explosion, remember. Other than the message The Accident aims to send about class, forgotten communities and corporate responsibility, it is yet another vehicle for Lancashire to prove why she is one of the best British actors around today. She insisted at the launch that she didnt want to be seen as the ‘queen of gritty drama, but between this, Happy Valley and Kiri she has the title sewn up. Few actors can truly play an ‘every man character convincingly – their star power blanketing everything – but she totally disappeared behind Pollys oversized outfits and the pretty spot-on Welsh accent that took six months to perfect. A special mention also has to go to Joanna Scanlan as Angela, delivering a fireball of a performance thats both deeply tragic and hilarious (in an upcoming episode she muses about a possible cover up: ‘Someones f. d someone, and no one can find the d* k. The Accident is hard-going, from the subject matter to the dark domestic abuse storyline, so we dont recommend you watch in one sitting, but Thorne has insisted there are ‘shafts of light injected into the series throughout. And with the Grenfell disaster mostly left by the wayside by the media and politicians alike with no one held accountable (yet) The Accident is a much needed high-intensity beam.
